Trump’s Decision Will Threaten Peace In Middle East: ARG

A day after US President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the Presidential Palace (ARG) said the Afghan government has expressed its deep concerns with the United States leadership through diplomatic channels over the matter.

Afghanistan calls for ensuring the rights of Palestine people to have an independent government, Presidential Palace says.

“The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan understands the deep concerns of the Muslim people of the country and the Muslims world,” the Presidential Palace said in a statement on Thursday. “The government of Afghanistan has already shared its deep concerns with US leadership through diplomatic channels about recognition of the Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transferring of US embassy to the city.”

“The decision has affected the feeling of Muslims around the world and it will threaten peace in the Middle East. Therefore, any unilateral move in this respect, without the participation of Palestine, will not result in a positive and permanent solution (to the problem),” ARG says in the statement.

The statement says the National Unity Government and the people of Afghanistan, along with other Muslims around the world, that the rights of Palestine people to have an independent government be ensured.

“Jerusalem, as the first Qiblah of Muslims, has importance for other religions in the world. Therefore, the location of Jerusalem should be fixed based on international laws and the United Nations regulations as well as according to the demand of millions of Muslims in the world,” the statement said.

“The National Unity Government permanently supports the process to ensure lasting and just peace in Palestine in collaboration with the Islam world and the international community under the structure of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the United Nations.”

Meanwhile, Chief Executive of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah, at a press conference on Thursday, reacted to Trump’s decision and said: “East Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine”.

The move has sparked anger among social media users in Afghanistan. They have condemned the decision and have called for justice to the Palestine people.

The remarks come a day after Trump announced that he officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Trump described the decision as “a long overdue step” to advance the Middle East peace process.

The US leader said his country would support a two-state solution if approved by both the Israelis and the Palestinians.

“Israel is a sovereign nation with the right, like every other sovereign nation, to determine its own capital,” Trump said.

Ahead of the decision, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned it will have “dangerous consequences” for the region.

President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said this week that Jerusalem is the red line for Muslims.
